During this unprecedented time of the Covid 19 pandemic, life goes on. Relationship conflicts at home or at work, even as people work remotely, do not disappear. In fact, some issues and questions come into sharper relief.
The Western Pennsylvania Family Center faculty has designed an Introduction to Bowen Theory, a new course that will address some of these questions. We hope to provide an entry point into the theory’s concepts while giving participants an engaging, interactive experience in order to interrogate and apply the theory in their own lives.
Developed for those with little or no previous knowledge of Bowen Theory, the course will introduce the theory’s eight concepts. Each session will begin with an online Zoom discussion of what was already presented followed by an introduction of the next concept. As the eight concepts are interrelated, ample opportunities will be available to see how they operate in all relationships in families, communities and organizations.
Course Structure and Fees
Length: The course structure will be eight (8) sessions of 90 minutes each.

Faculty: Two WPFC faculty members will teach the course: Dr. Arthur Zipris and Jane Adams
Needed Equipment: Participants will need access to a computer and will receive a Zoom link to join.
Size: To maximize learning, the number of participants will be limited to 10.
Fee: Included in the tuition of $150 will be a WPFC published workbook covering all theory concepts and writings by faculty members.

Jane Adams has an MS in Child Development from the University of Pittsburgh. She has studied Bowen Family Systems for over 15 years and has presented regularly to the WPFC Basic Seminar class. Jane was the director of St. Paul’s Episcopal Nursery School in Mt. Lebanon, Pa from 1992 until 2012. She is on the faculty of WPFC.
Arthur Zipris is a licensed psychologist, practicing at the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute, where he sees individuals, families, and couples. He has studied Bowen Family Systems Theory for over 30 years, and has done many presentations on different applications of the theory, both in Pittsburgh and elsewhere. He is also on the faculty of the Western Pa. Family Center, and has taught Family Systems theory for many years as an adjunct lecturer with the MFT program at Seton Hill. He is the primary author of the BFST workbook, and developed, along with other faculty members, the on-line program of the theory at the Family Center, as well as being a facilitator of the Basic Seminar at the Family Center.
